Upgraded graphics card, now Windows gets stuck on loading screen

I just upgraded from an EVGA GeForce GTX 650 to a Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 2GB, and now I get stuck on the Windows startup screen. PC Specs:

  • ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0 Motherboard
  • AMD FX 4130 Processor
  • Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD
  • Kingwin ABT-750MM PSU (750W)
  • Windows 7 Home Edition
  • 2x 8GB Kingston HyperX Red
  • Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 2GB

  • I doubt that there is any problem with the other components, because everything works fine when I switch back to my old GTX 650. Here are some of the things I've tried so far as I've searched other threads:

    • Completely uninstalled the old video card's drivers
    • Tried booting both with and without the new video card's drivers installed, both ways get the same issue
    • Startup Repair hangs when the bar reaches full on the "Windows is loading files..." screen
    • Safe mode hangs when classpnp.sys is loaded
    • Booting directly from the Windows disk successfully loads the files from the disk but then goes to the windows startup screen and gets stuck there again.
    • Booting the video card driver install disk gives me a black screen
    • Tried changing the pcie slot that the video card sits in, no solution
    • Changed the SATA port of the hard drive, no solution

  • As a side note, it's difficult for me to use safe mode, because every time I press F8 on startup it takes me directly to the Windows Error Recovery screen instead of the Advanced Boot Options screen. If there's a definite way of getting around Windows Error Recovery that'd be helpful so I can try other Advanced Boot Options. Thank you guys for all the help you provide, hopefully we can sort this out.

This was happening when my GPU died 2 weeks ago, only could work in safe mode.
According to that, I assume your new GPU is faulty and you can try to RMA it.

check to see you didn't "jar" any of the cables inside the case while installing and powering the card....... double check sata and hd power cables at both ends.

Everything seems fine, I've been inside my case almost all night last night and all the cables checked out.

If all else fails, looks like I'll have to get this card replaced. Would it be a compatibility issue with this model of video card or do you think I just got a faulty one?

cables can "look" okay but if you don't manually check................. and straighten them or shove them on................

try the pci-e 4x slot and see what happens.............. don't care about the "performance" thing. just try the slot.

Fiddled with the cables a lot when I first found that things weren't working. Cables are definitely fine, especially since I've been switching between two different cards and it only works with the old one. The second pcie slot that I tried was a 4x slot, still didn't work :/
