HELP! I put my new HP Pavilion desktop in sleep mode and now I can't get it to wake up. I turn on the CPU and the on light stays on but nothing happens. I turn the monitor on, it says no signal, then says going to sleep and shuts off.

What do I do to wake it up!!

Solution

By CPU I presume you mean the Power button on your Tower. (It actually applies power to your Motherboard, and you're supposed to get a splash screen followed by the blue Windows logo as your machine boots.) Normally I would advise a series of checks to make which would involve getting into your Tower, but as it's new it may be advisable to RMA the system as it is definitely not supposed to behave like that!
If...

Sleep mode has caused me more problems than any other area of Win 8. Best advice, don't use it!
Meanwhile, with your Monitor on, power off your Tower by holding down the power switch for at least 5 seconds, then try switching on again. See how far you get beyond the Setup splash screen.

Absolutely nothing. The disk drive light flashed twice upon turning on the CPU but nothing happened on the screen. It stayed black.

When a PC is in sleep mode, is it supposed to wake up by simply pressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse? I have never used sleep mode before, and certainly won't use it again!

If you can't even get into BIOS (Setup) then there's not an awful lot that can be achieved. One thing you could try is removing all power from the machine (Switch off at the wall) then press and hold your Power button for about 30 seconds. Release, and try again with power restored. Next you could try resetting CMOS by removing the CMOS battery for 30 secs, but that involves entering your Tower, and if it's sealed it may void your Warranty.
What model HP do you have?

Unplugging the power and pressing the start button for 30 seconds did the trick!
I had placed a call with HP tech support and they called me about the time you replied last. They had me do what you suggested. They also took control of my computer and made various checks and adjustments. Everything is working fine now.

Thanks dodger46 for your help and suggestions.

Have a very Happy New Year!

I'm having the same problem with Windows 7 and I don't even know what kind of tower. Is this still likely to work?

Ohh, thank Celestia.. It did. Thank you so much, dodger! I was terrified!

Sorry for not posting an actual answer by the way.. But I'm sure that's not too much of a problem on a solved question.

You're welcome, sometimes works on 'frozen' laptops, too...

If you have an Asus monitor, thats why. Also you can just unplug and re plug in your monitor from the back of the tower if that happens. It's about 50/50 if my monitor is gonna turn on or not.

This may or may not have been relevant to your situation when it happened, you may have had USB devices plugged into your computer. My Windows 7 desktop doesnt seem to wake up from sleep mode (no keyboard/mouse response, not even the power button pressed/held in different ways) and would not wake until USB devices were unplugged from it. The two devices i had were both external hard drives, it may have something to do with those particular things or with anything usb.

You just saved me a bunch of money. I had almost the same problem except my system was working until I upgraded to Windows 10 (finally). Did this and now it's back to normal
