I was given $200 Amazon credit for Christmas ($60 of which is going to upgrade the cooling on my current rig). So, I have about $140 left to invest in a mechanical keyboard..!

As for my uses, I'm a student and write papers and such quite often, but also game quite a bit. I've been debating between MX Browns and MX Reds: Is it easy enough to learn how to type quickly on Reds? There seams to be a better selection in Reds than Browns... Is there any downside in gaming to the Browns? I mostly play FPS (think CSGO).

Can you guys suggest me some keyboards that:

  • ■ Don't scream 'gamer' with obnoxious fonts (Though backlighting is OK)
    ■ Perhaps have some macro settings
    ■ Preferably are not tenkey-less
    ■ Are within my $140 budget (ON AMAZON ONLY), also Prime shipping is a plus :D

Thanks in advance,

I highly recommend the MaxKeyboard mechanical keyboards:

For Cherry MX Reds, the Nighthawk X9:

For Cherry MX Browns, the Nighthawk X8:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=nighthawk+x8&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anighthawk+x8

They come in a variety of backlight colors and are excellent boards. I have both X8 and X9. I think I prefer the reds, but that is a matter of personal preference.

Thanks for the recommendations! Do you do a lot of typing? I've heard that the low actuation force for the Reds can cause you to make typos... Has this been an issue for you?

Thanks for your recommendations!

I type a lot at work which is where I use the X8 with browns. My home setup is gaming with the reds. You definitely need to be more precise with the reds because it's so easy to register a key press. They feel so buttery smooth though that I love typing on the reds anyway. I suggest you go to a local store and try out the different key switches to see which you prefer yourself.

They used to be one of the best. Some of the Das models are now manufactured in China and have switched the stabilizers on the larger keys from Costar to a lesser quality type. You'll have to read reviews to pick out which Das models are still high quality.

MaxKeyboard uses Costar stabilizers BTW :)
