Trying to get an archaic Gateway G6-450 reconnected to the internet.

So my parents still have their old G6-450, with the Pentium II processor and Windows 98, and have been wanting to get it working again because my dad has a tablet (finally he will admit that it isn't capable as an actual computer is) and my mom has a work-issued laptop that has so many security components that she really can't use it for much besides work.

My question has to do with connecting it to our router. The tower connects via USB port, but our router is wireless/LAN. So I'm wondering if there's a way to connect it to a LAN cable through the USB port, or if I should install a wireless card into the tower (and if so, suggestions would be appreciated), or if I should have them upgrade to a router that also has USB ports (I've been trying to upgrade them to a better router for some time).

Also, they're looking to mostly use it for printing, and so that my dad can back up his iPad, so I'm hoping to download itunes as well. So, should I upgrade the system to XP? And if so, would my OS disc from my old Dell Inspiron 1501 work? Or would I need to purchase an OS upgrade?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

You could spend money and a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to get a 15 year old PC up and running online.
Windows 98 should not be put online. No security updates for years. XP is falling out of support in a few short months. And the old install disk from your Dell won't work.
Even if you do get it running....it will be deadly slow. So slow as to be unusable.

Or, you could spend ~$300 and get a fully functioning, mostly current machine, and have it running this afternoon.

There comes a time when the old stuff just does not work anymore. This is one of those times.
