I have a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H motherboard that has four fan headers. I only want five fans for my case (2 front intakes, 1 bottom intake, 1 top exhaust, and 1 rear exhaust). Would it be better to purchase a PWM splitter and run the five fans off of my motherboard or to purchase a fan controller? Additionally, if I went the splitter route, should I get a splitter that can run as many fans as possible and utilizes a molex connector for power or use a simple y splitter a few of the headers to get the amount of fans I want? Thanks.

Solution
A fan controller would let you connect more fans. The PWM fan splitter lets you control the speed of the fan via the Bios.
If your case can only support a max of 5 fives, then just grab a PWM fan splitter.
The molex ones does not have fan control, so if the fan relies on PWM to control the rpm, then connecting to the molex will force the fan to run at full speed and it will create lots of noise.

What about this PWM splitter- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119248
It's supposed to allow multiple PWM fans to run off one header, but pull power from the PSU. This way you still get the fan control from the software (only one fan would be monitored, but all fans would run off inputs to that fan) but not pull the power from the motherboard.
