I am experiencing an annoying issue with my ASUS X550VC-XX093 notebook.

It has a combined headphones/microphone jack and every time I plug in a pair of headphones the notebook's internal mic is disabled. I am assuming it's trying to use the headphones' mic, but the problem is they don't have one, so every time I want to go on Skype for e.g. I have to unplug them.

Is there any solution to this issue apart from buying a headset? I am running Windows 8.1 Pro.

Right click on the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop, and click recording devices. Then right click on the integrated mic and select "set as default device" and "set as default communication device"

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the reply!

I've already tried this but the only recording device listed is the internal mic and it's already the default one, doesn't matter if I have the headphones plugged in or not.

I have exactly the same problem with my Asus. When I insert headphones to the combo socket, the internal mic stops working. What to do? I can't change it in settings or I don't know how to do it.

Hi all,

I was also facing this kind of a problem in mt ASUS X202E.

I tried all sorts of setting changes in Realtek HD audio manager but all in vain.

1. Next I uninstalled the software.

2. after uninstalling the software go to device manager and uninstall all the audio drivers.

3. Then windows will automatically search for drivers online and it will automatically reinstall the drivers.

4. Then plug in the headphones. Once you plug in the headphones windows will automatically install its drivers.

The main problem which I found was in the realtek HD audio manager. I uninstalled it and then headphones and internal mic can work simultaneously.

Hello! I use Windows 8.1 and this issue with the combo jack finished after updating the Operation System. They sent the package of updates in April 2014 and since then it works fine for me. Definitely, don't buy a new headset. There are other solutions for free.
