I have a fully up to date macbook air
a Kingston TravelLite SD / MMC Reader http://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/products?model=fcr-hs2mmc

And a possibly busted San Disk 8GB SDHC card

A friend asked if I could undelete some files, and I said sure.. if they were accidentally deleted, they should be recoverable. But the flashdrive doesn't even show up as a line item in Apple's Disk Utility software. When I insert my older 512 disk, it comes right up, files and folders and a Disk Utility Line Item.

So it ocurred to me, maybe the SanDisk 8GB SDHC drive is dead, or maybe this old trusty Kingston reader pre-dates "SDHC" and doesn't do "SDHC"?

SDHC host devices are required to accept older SD cards.[1] However, older host devices do not recognize SDHC or SDXC memory cards, although some devices can do so through a firmware upgrade.[7] Older Windows operating systems released before Windows 7 require patches or service packs to support access to SDHC cards.

Is it possible my Kingston Memory card reader doesn't support SDHC? or is this a simple matter of "if the disk fits" it should just work?

Is the firmware / software compatibility discussed in the wiki article all Mac OS / Window level stuff? I don't know what's in this little reader.. if there is a little chipset and such that might not support SDHC? or if it's just a bunch of copper traces connecting the right USB "pins"

I have two one of the has a SDHC logo and reads my SDHC cards just fine. The other one is old and does not have the SDHC and will not read them at all. It does not even show there is anything plugged in. As far as I understood they have to be SDHC compatible in order to read them.

I tried plugging it into my windows 8 PC with the same Kingston Adapter, and I couldn't see the driver there either.. Can't do much with Recuva if I can't see the drive. But trying on mac or PC, the Kingston TravelLite could still be the incompatbility culprit? it's clearly more than a dumb copper to copper pin adapter.. it's a got light that flashes with activity, so perhaps there are SDHC compatible readers and those that aren't - in which case, how does one know if theirs is compatible?
