Sony Headphones only produce static

For Christmas I bought my Grandpa a set of Sony Corldess stereo headphone system MDR-IF245RK. I have everything matched up with the instructions. But, when it is put to actual use only static comes from both earpieces. I have tried all of the suggestions on Sony's support site but nothing helps. I don't want to see a waste of $80, and he was excited to try them out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can you please at least tell us, what it is connected to and how? TV or PC? Headphone jack or the stereo line in?

It is plugged into the T.V. through the stereo line. I have tried through a PC and a headphone jack. Nothing works. Is it just defective?

Sounds like you got a dead one, if it doesn't work on any source.

I did figure it out. There is a headphone jack on the receiver that it has to be plugged in to. The T.V. Audio has to much interference.
