I have an old 1tb hard drive from my HP pavilion that i would like to use for my new build. I did purchase a new copy of Windows 8, because the OS on the HDD is OEM. So, Can i use the HDD in my new build? How would i go about using it in my new build?

New pc specs-
Intel core i5 4670k
Asus Radeon R9 270 2gb
Asus Z87-A Mobo
500w Thermaltake PSU
8gb DDR3 1333Mhz Memory (ill upgrade to 1600 later)

Hello,

If you are doing a new build, I'd suggest incorporating this drive for storage, but why not also upgrade to an SSD for your operating system? Since you haven't yet installed Win 8, now would be the perfect time.

You can get a Crucial 64GB SSD for like $70, or better yet a Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB SDD for only about $90.

Trust me, you will be glad that you did. :D

Solution
take it from a cheapskate you can reuse it but then it mite last 2 months or 3 more years and if you go with a oem copy of windows and it goes 2 months you may have to get another copy of windows to boot.. like was said above just get a new drive and use the old one for storage [not saying that a new drive will not fail in 2 months but it gives you better peace of mind ]. i been bit good by going cheap..

When I purchase a hard drive, I place a label on the drive for the "in service date". For 0-5 years, I use these drives as a primary data drive. For years 5-7, I use them for a backup drive. Anytime I get a smart error and/or bad sectors - out comes the hammer and I replace the drive.

I utilize SSD for the primary OS drive.
