Is my graphics card too hot?

My laptop's graphics card seems to be getting too hot while under load. While idle, it is around 35-45 degrees (Celsius), but while under load it is about 75 degrees. If I'm playing a really graphically intense game it can get up to 80 (sometimes 85) degrees. That's when I start to get worried.

For anyone who cares I have an AMD Radeon HD 8790M on my laptop (which is really intended for business, but I've converted it to more of a gaming laptop)

Also, if it is too hot, will it shorten the gpu's life?

GPUs are designed to run a lot hotter than a CPU. They can reach temps as high as 90c and still be ok.
It probably wouldn't hurt to see if you have some dust bunnies living in your laptop. Blow the dust out and see if that helps your temps.
Honestly I don't think the temps are high enough to cause any problems.

Seeing as it is a laptop (which IMO is never good for gaming), temperatures will get hotter due to the confined space and whatnot. Best bet would be to take i apart and clean it thoroughly.\

Or get a laptop stand/cooler thingy.

Normal for a laptop.
GPUs can run quite hot and laptop parts are always hotter

Just keep it under 90 or so and you will be ok
