New to the computer world. Please help with hot processor.

Hey guys i'm pretty new to he gaming PC world and am still fairly unaware of all the dangers. I bought a Cyber Power Raidmax gaming computer around a year ago and just got a new MSI GTX 660 and installed it. Now here is my first question: It came with a power cable with two adapters coming off the end and my computer only had one 'intake' so I only plugged in one and left the other one secure but not attached to anything. Is that going to harm anything or did it cause my main problem? My main problem is: As I was playing ARMA 3 tonight I heard a 'clinking' in my computer and then it shutoff. I took off the side panel to discover the fan that covered the processor had come loose with some sort of pasted 'melted' on it and the processor. What happened and what should i do?

Any questions please ask. If i WASN"T clear enough also please ask. Any help will be appreciated.

So the melted stuff you see is probably your thermal compound so don't worry about that. I can't see how installing a new GPU would cause your heatsink to fall off of your motherboard. That would have to do with the installation of the heatsink itself. It may have not been very tight, and the addition of more fans caused the mounting hardware to vibrate off. But that is the only seeable answer to your question. You should be able to clean the thermal paste on the CPU and heatsink, buy some more, and secure the CPU cooler back onto the CPU. What happened is that you bought a low quality prebuilt, and it shows in that the guy who assembled it didn't even properly secure the CPU heatsink. Provided the heatsink didnt short anything out on the graphics card below and your CPU temp didn't spike too fast when the heatsink fell off, nothing should be broken. The paste is normal, its there to assist the thermal transfer between the CPU heatspreader and heatsink.

What your going to have to do is clean off the paste, get some more (I personally use Arctic Cooling MX-4) and remount the heatsink.

Thank you so much Sevenater! I thought i maybe have melted something important. So the thermal paste is what helps keep it cool? And it goes on the back of the fan (heatsink i think) and then right back on the processor?

It is not what keeps the CPU cool, it is what transmits the heat from the CPU to the heatsink to cool it better. But yes, it goes on the heatsink, and on the processor, only apply it to the CPU though, it will create a seal with the heatsink.
