Just updated to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 about 2 days ago. So far, I've had 2 hard lock ups, 1 per day. They appear to be completely random when they happen. It's happened once while playing a game (World of Warcraft) and again while alt tabbed browsing the internet. Now my computer has hard locked in the past before with Windows 7, maybe twice in the past 6 months or so, not sure. But due to the frequency so far, I'm not too ecstatic this problem is going to go away since updating to Windows 8.1.

What happened though, was during the above scenarios, my monitor completely froze as well as my sound. My mouse and keyboard no longer responded either, though for whatever reason my case lights and fans remained on. I tried resetting my computer by holding the power button, but that too was unresponsive, leading me to actually unplug my PC to reset it.

I was kind of thinking it was a motherboard issue, but I find it odd this problem just happens to occur after I update to Windows 8.1, with not even a quarter of the programs and files I previously had on Windows 7 (from updating).

Is the problem likely Windows 8.1 or is it hardware related? My computer is about 4 years old, brand new PSU which was put in about a 3-4 weeks ago.
