How Bad is it if I fail to install an os

I have a motherboard that I am not sure is stable it's old and has a core duo how bad could I kill my new 1tb hard drive if I fail while installing windows

Traildriver
If the install fails, then a simple reformat will be all you need to perform on the drive. Worst case is putting the drive as a secondary drive in another PC to reformat.
