I have this PC already but want to get the max performance. What would be the next best thing to upgrade?

My PC: i5 4570 @ 3.2ghz, GTX 760 2gb, 8gb 1600mhz RAM, ASUS Z87-C Motherboard, Corsair CX600w PSU, 1TB Hard Drive

The 290x is right on par with the 780 TI I believe.

Everything is fine, except for the GTX 760 I guess.
the 760 will also be able to play most games at ultra settings with relatively high FPS.
but if you need to upgrade, I'd try to get a 290x, a better GPU is really the only thing you can do to make this play better for games.

Thanks! I am pretty happy with this system. What is the 290x equivalent to in the Geforce series? (BTW, I have windows 7. Is windows 8 better?)

What's your monitor resolution? If you're gaming at 1080p I really question whether it's a worthwhile upgrade. Sure it benchmarks better, and maybe you could crank from high to ultra settings in like the two most demanding games, which you might be able to notice if you watched the two side by side. But I'm not convinced it's worthwhile.
Why not upgrade your monitor, or get a nice headset or something if you're itching to upgrade.
If you're on a 1440p monitor, ignore me.
Actually, feel free to ignore me anyway its your money! I'm just throwing in my 2 cents worth.

I just bought a BenQ 1080p monitor and am ordering adapter for my nice Turtle Beach headset (previously from the Xbox). I do need a new mouse and keyboard though. Any recommendations on what a good gaming mouse and keyboard would be?

Is it a 60hz monitor, or did you get a 120 or 144hz model? If you're on a 60hz monitor, I'd echo my thoughts above. If you're aiming for 120fps or higher, then the 290x might be a good choice.
Keyboards and mice are really a personal choice. If you have access to a store, it's a good idea to go in and get a sense of what you like. I've got a Corsair K70 that I really like, but it depends on taste really.
