Hi all.

I have just finished setting up the first stage of a (raid 5) media server.
I am using a Dell PERC h310 with 4 - 3tb hdd's.

After setting up very carefully as I did not have spare drives I managed to copy over and set up a Raid 5 configuration, which I expected would be the most efficient use of the space I had while keeping a full redundancy if a drive should fail. However either the set up did not quite go to plan or the Raid 5 set up isn't all it is cracked up to be.

This is what I am left with;
4 drives in the array all with 2794gb usable space (11,176gb)
The card totals this to 8382gb, I was under the assumption this would include the loss of the array that was needed for back up. After the drives where configured and I managed to get the system booted up successfully though I found I only had 8186gb and 2729gb of THAT had been taken for parity!!

So in conclusion, I have a raid 5 array with a total of 11,176gb of usable space which has been reduced by more than half to 5450gb, I see this as less efficient than a Raid 1.

Can anyone give any help as to whether my set up has gone wrong somewhere down the line or I have just miss read everything ever read regarding Raid 5

Thanks,

Stuart.
