New Ubuntu user struggleing to get Nvidia drivers working

I have been trying to install and use the nvidia graphics drivers on ubuntu 13.10, i have followed many tutorials and used different drivers but I always end up with the same result. it boots into ubuntu, comes up with a terminal login screen then goes to what looks like some sort of graphics test where it loops through colours and patterns, i am still able to get back to the terminal by pressing (ctrl alt f1) where i can log in and uninstall the driver and what not. What would cause this sort of issue and how would i go about solving it so i could use the nvidia driver?

btw the gpu is a GTX 770, also this is preaty much a fresh install of ubuntu, all i have installed is mumble and oracle java
