Multiple PCIEx16 Video card on same motherboard

Can I fit multiple of video cards next to each other on a motherboard that has multiple pcie x16 slots?

I'm specifically looking at these two products. It's a question of depth but I'm having a hard time figuring it out. First, it's hard to find info on how thick the video card is and 2nd the space between the pcie slots.

*VisionTek 900614 Radeon HD 7750 2GB GDDR5 PCIe 6x mini DP Video Card (Eyefinity 6)
*ASRock Z77 Extreme9 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Yes it's called SLI or Crossfire.

Yes you can sli/crossfire your cards if they are the same cards. you can't sli / crossfire 2 different cards.

Sli/Crosfire if I understand correctly is to improve graphics performance. My goal is to have many monitors coming out of the same computer. However, this makes me think that the motherboards people use for this may do what I need. Are there any recommended motherboards that have been known to support multiple video cards? THANK!

Sorry just read your post again, yes motherboard designed for SLI and crossfire are designed with the space between the ports in mind. They will run alongside each other and physically fit.

yes, it's doable as long as the motherboard has some other random PCIe slot between the two PCIe-16 slots (which invariably they do cuz they've already thought about this possibility ages ago)

you can put in ANY two cards, doesn't matter who made them or what chipset they are - and you can make them work INDEPENDENTLY (no SLI or CrossFire happening) to feed 2 monitors from the first card and 3 monitors from the second card (as an example). that's what i do, and have been doing for a few years and it's easily the single most important attribute of one of my computers.

BUT if you want to take advantage of the SLI / CrossFire benefits of more graphical power, you need to make sure the two cards are same / similar (check SLI & CrossFire requirements), and then you can ONLY connect monitors to the FIRST card.

well most new atx motherboards support multible gpu's but the question is how many do you need? MSI Z77 MPower, Socket-1155 has room for 2 gpu's but there is not many motherboards for lga 1155 slots out there that supports over 2 gpu's.

my case is a perfect example for you:

GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard
FX-6350 processor
dual HD7790 graphics cards
six Acer 23" 1920x1080 monitors (three per card)
AMD Catalyst Control Centre needs to be opened and you need to manually DISABLE CrossFire (it's on by default)

works like a charm for non-game / non-multiscreen-movie use, such as productivity and specifically stocks trading (yes, just like in the movies)

Thanks. Are there any motherboards you recommend for multiple gpus? Most important however is htose that can fit the VisionTek 900614 Radeon HD 7750 which needs a PCIEx16 slot. Otherwise it'll cut down my overall output if I have to use a card with less than 6 outputs. Thanks!

Thanks! No need for SLI/CrosFire. Have you found any brands/mbs most reliable for the computer you use for the sole purpose of having multiple outputs?

MSI Z77 MPower, Socket-1155 should be one of the best lga 1155 slot cards out there.

Thanks!. The one reason I like the VisionTech 900614 is it can make 6 outputs which requires two of the HD7790 (or as you're using it). They both use the pcie x16 so if you're looking into more monitors maybe you can add another set...for work purpose only lol

Quick question it says onlien that you mb has "Expansion Slots: 2 x PCI Express x16 slot running at x16 ,1x " But you're able to use two of the same video cards that are at x16? So the x16 si the length not the speed? And for non-graphic intensive tasks it still works great?

Yea looks more aligned with what I'm looking for than the asrock and i heard that msi is more realiable too.Thanks!

ok, PCIe-16 versus PCIe-16-at-1:

most PCIe-16 slots are set up that the first slot is 16x, and other slots are 8x or even 4x, which means you can run ONE card at 16x or if you run TWO cards they run at 8x/8x (the first slot loses half of it's bandwidth)

SOME newer mobo chipsets (like the 990FXA) allow both PCIe-16 slots to run at 16x, so that when you have two cards they are running at 16x/16x.

you need to check each individual mobo spec sheet to find out whether the PCIe-16 slots are running at 16x or 8x or 4x and how they run when multiple slots are occupied. you might see a spec that says "16x/0/0 or 8x/8x/0 or 8x/4x/4x" if a mobo has THREE slots. the info shows you how each slot runs as extra slots are populated. I've liked gigabyte since their specs are VERY clean on this, but i'm sure ASUS / ASRock / others can list the data as well, even if you need to dig a tiny bit.

for non-gaming stuff, it likely makes little difference if you're running 8x/8x or 16x/16x, but i prefer the warm-n-fuzzy feeling of knowing they're 16x/16x.
