Simple file sharing is gone; XP SP3

I have an issue, I'm trying to recover an HDD which I haven't been able to get on for years. Recently I've had the time to fiddle with it and I actually got into it on my computer through another HDD that I'm on right now using XP, but now I know why I cannot boot up the Win 7 on the other HDD.

Somehow the user folders "All Users" and "Default User" has been denied access to me, the administrator. I have tried googling this issue but I reach dead ends. There is no security tab in the folder properties, and there is no simple file sharing option in the folder options.

Could someone enlighten me? I'd like to use Win 7 again, yet the issue here is that when I boot the Win 7 HDD, all I see is the cursor and the login menu background, but no menu itself. So I'm thinking this obviously has to do with the fact that both of the user folders are denying access to anyone.

The administrator is a local account and specific to the windows installation. The administrator you are logged in with, is not the administrator for the windows installation on the other disk. You can try to 'take ownership' of the files on the other disk, but I'm not sure if that works, because XP and 7 use different NTFS versions.

1HDD for Win 7 that doesn't boot the OS into the desktop
1HDD I'm on currently using XP SP3

The Win 7 HDD is in the 'My Computer' listing, I can go into it by using Win XP. I go into the Users folder and try to double click All Users "Access is Denied".

Double click the Default User folder and I also get "Access is Denied".

Yikes, I didn't know that. Is there some sort of way to add a Registry key to enable simple file sharing, or a security tab option?

Trying to get into the other OS's user folders will result in "Access is Denied". Completely different NTFS permissions.
As mentioned above, you can try to 'take ownership'.

I forgot to mention there is also no advanced tab. :heink:

There seems to be a significant lack of TABS on my XP OS.

XP bleerrgg kill it already, HOWEVER there are solutions for everything

For XP home, boot into safe mode (using actual Administrator account) to gain access to NTFS permissions options

For XP professional go into my computer - tools - folder options --- there will be the option for using simple file sharing etc (and NTFS permissions are accessible etc)

Why not just use Windows 7 to do the work, extract the data and kill that dinosaur already?

I will try this. Also, that's the reason for this whole ordeal. Windows 7 boots, but the login screen is blank. Background and mouse are there, yet no possible way to logon. =/

Sounds like you have two borked up installations.
Is there anything critical on either of those drives? I suggest just a full reinstall. Blow everything away and start over.

Unfortunately I cannot, I have no Win 7 or XP installation discs, they are both from different systems I have bought in the past that were already installed onto each HDD. Currently can't buy any new type, though I have an external 1TB HDD and I've been thinking of burning a Linux boot disc to intall onto it, using WINE for Windows games.

It's seems that would be more simple, if not completely solve a lot of my issues.:D

Also thank you to everyone who replied and helped me work through this!

1. It's on the same system.
2. 2 years ago (on the same system) it randomly did this. So I didn't switch it, but I'm resurrecting it.
3. Anything can happen, don't say it can't happen.
4. Windows 8 is poo.
5. Windows 8 is poo.
6. Windows 8 is poo.

I can access it through my windows XP OS. If I can do that then there is definitely a possibility of me being able to use it as I once did. It's just the matter of figuring out how. There are too many threads out there with dead ends and if someone comes across this same problem, there will not be a dead end.

1. You said in your last posts " they are both from different systems" - either they are or they aren't make your mind up
2. So you had 2 years to back up your data and fix the problem and you did what?
3. Anything can happen sure, such as not being able to fix the OS, or spending weeks of effort to patch a failing install with one problem after the other, the thing you actually want to happen is a fresh install
4. no
5. no
6. no again
