Hello everyone,

I'm in the market for a new mATX socket 1155 motherboard to replace in my aging Lenovo CH61M 1,0. I'm having a hard time identifying which chipset I need...

I don't need any 7.1 channel surround sound since I only have 2.0 speakers..
Will not be overclocking...
Not going to go with dual graphics cards, just going to stick with my MSI R9 270 ...
My cpu is a i5-3330P if it helps at all...

I mainly use my computer for school and weekend gaming ( hence the R9 270 )

So which chipset DO I need ??
Thnx for answering :)

The asrock looks the better board to me!

Has 3 x Sata 6Gb headers which is quite rare on low end boards, especially as it has 8 sata ports in total, thats pretty good!

Also has the USB 3.0 header you are after.

Is the computer chassis matx?

If so pick up anything that size based on a intel B75 chipset, it will support Ivybridge CPU's straight out the box unlike some older chipsets (H61 or H67) that may need a bios update before they will post with your CPU.

A B75 chipset board supports USB3, PCI-E 3.0 and Sata 3.0 which are all features youd want on a new board.

On the licencing issue usually a call to microsoft and explain you have swapped the motherboard will mean they allow you to reactivate. Not heard of anyone having problems with that.

Just for info, the OEM license of Windows is tied to the board. So when you replace it you will probably find that Windows will require re-activating. As Bungz said often a call to Microsoft should get it re-activated but it's not 100% full proof. Because in theory you are in breach of the license. Just to make you aware, do with that information what you will.

Also as Bungz said a B75 chipset should suit your requirement if you are to go ahead with it.

Thanks for the advice. B75 sounds right for me... Any prefered brands ?? MSI and ASRock are in my budget.. And about contacting Microsoft.. I live in Central Europe so I just ring them up on their contact number on their site ??

Both MSI and ASRock make quality boards for the price point. I would go with MSI, but only because I've used MSI before.

As for contacting Microsoft don't straight away. Boot Windows and see what happens. If it requires activating try just clicking activate and see if it will just do it... if it does not I believe it pops up with a contact number.

Im pretty sure if windows has a hissy fit it will give you a number to call to activate over the phone, and this will be specific to your region of the world.

I prefer Asus or Gigabyte personally, but if you cant find them within budget then get the MSI or Asrock that has the most features for your money.

What is your goal(s) in changing the motherboard? From the info in the post, if you not going for OC'ing I'm not sure what you'll looking to gain????

This link shows detail on chipsets ("B" series will do for needs you mentioned...)

Yes, you will Most likely have to re-purchase Win7 or 8. The manufacturers, Lenovo, Dell, Gateway, .... etc key to the motherboard. Replace it and you need a new copy. Same with OEM / Builders edition, if you do a major upgrade it voids that license too. Only one that can move freely among hardware is the "Full Retail" version.

That said, you can Try to call Microsoft and "talk 'em into" re-activating your original copy. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't.....

Well for one I need to have a USB 3.0 front header and my Corsair 350D has a "HD Audio" front panel connector which I have no idea what is.. So I need to be able to plug that in aswell :)
