Good day!
I am currently setting up a new wireless connection using my encore 802.11 router.. I plugged in a LAN cable from my other access point. What is the difference between gateway and bridging and what shout I choose in order to set up my new wireless network?

Can you describe a little more what you are trying to do?

Are you adding a new AP to cover an area that has spotty connections?

Are you setting up a separate LAN?

What is a basic schematic of the current setup?

(example)

ISP > Bridged Modem > Router > Switch.....

How are you configuring your network? If you have a cable modem (no router), if you plug the cable modem to the WAN port of the new router, and plug the computer into an ethernet port on that router, you don't have to use a bridge or gateway.

If you are coming from an existing LAN, the best way is to look how your new router can act like an access point (deferring DNS to the first router) to allow connectivity...there are many options depending upon how you are going to be using the hardware....

it's like this
ISP> 1st Router> LAN> 2nd Router

Ok, now there are 2 ways to do this.

If you are creating 2 different LAN's or subnets you need to create a static reservation for the 2nd router, and just plug them in. Then set each router to a different address block. (eg. 1st router 192.16...... 2nd router 172.16.......) However, devices connected to the 2 networks will not be visible to each other.

Second option is to use it as an AP (access point) and let the 1st router handle all routing. To do that most routers have you plug the cable from the other router into one of the *outputs* (instead of the normal input). You will also have to go into the router settings to disable DHCP.

If you google "<Router model here> used as Access Point" (replacing the <> statement with the model #) it should bring up a tutorial of the different settings you would need to change.
