i5 - 4670K run slower overclocked?

I just got my CPU 2 days ago, and needed a bit more performance, so I decided to overclock to 4.0GHz with 1.280v which I read on some website, it does run stable which is good. But when I play a game like CS:GO, it has 50fps in smoke, but without OC it has 70fps. Is it too much for the CPU to handle?

Solution

Every chip is different. First, don't overclock with stock cooler. The chip will heat too much.

Once it settled, start overclocking. Now, you have already established stable settings. Drop voltages little by little and test stability with such programs as prime95. ALWAYS WATCH TEMPERATURES. Ideally, you should stay under 80 Celsius under load.

What voltage would you recommend? And yes I have the stock cooler.

You will need an aftermarket cooler if you want a stable overclock in games or applications that work more than one of your 4 CPU cores. To avoid damaging your system, you should return to the stock settings as soon as possible.

If you want a recommendation, full system specs will be needed.

The highest temperature I have see it reach is 45'C, and that's without the fan at 100%

Ok, what should i drop it by every time? 1.280 -> 1.270?

Is it under load? I find it hard to believe, especially with stock cooler. Download RealTemp program and run Prime95.

Yes, one step at a time. Drop it too much, and you won't even boot.

Do you know what the stock voltage is? I can't find it on internet and in bios and software it just says auto.

Motherboards tend to overvolt CPUs on auto, so you'll need to put it on manual. Stock voltages? Well, it works like this: you put everything on auto so there is no overclock. Motherboard will also reduce voltages to some level which you can consider stock.

I put the normal clock to 4.0 and the auto overclock to 4.0 so it would not change.
So there is no way of me seeing the 'auto' clock? How am I supposed know where to start? 0.425 or 10.367... Could be anything?

I have the voltage down to 1.125 and at full load the highest temp I got was 79'C. Is that ok?

If overclock is stable (no crashes), it is OK. I would still get an aftermarket cooler. You don't need anything expensive. Hyper 212+ is a good choice.

Yea, it is stable, and I remembered I had a good fan on my old board, so I will just get some thermal paste and put that on I think.
