My Current Display Conundrum

Hey guys,

Back in October I bought 2 gtx 780s when the prices dropped (right before the 780ti was released) as I was preparing for 4k. I am realizing now that 4k may still be out of my reach. I was planning to get an affordable 4k monitor and play the games I can get 40-60fps on in 4k and everything else I would just go to 1440p or so.

I was planning on getting the Dell UP2414Q but I read some people's reviews and they said that IT DOESN'T UPSCALE!! It just shows the resolution you pick and black space around it.

My question is should I just scrap 4k altogether? I realize I probably should have went for the 780ti in SLI instead but oh well. Is 1440p good enough? Will I be able to see a definite increase in quality?

PS: I am also curious about gaming support of resolutions. I have for months been trying to look at a list of games that support 4k and came up with nothing. Does anyone know if all recent games support 4k or 1440p? I don't want to get a monitor and have little to no games support it. Thanks.

Yeah I don't think 4k will be supported. Remember, 60hz is all you need as your eyes can only see 60FPS - 144Hz should only be used for 3D high end. Anything in between is pointless!

I think go for the 1440p - Try ASUS PB278Q - Great Monitor!

4k games will turn up eventually and be playable with the 2 gtx 780's. Trouble is that you jumped the gun and there's still alot of technical discussions at the tech companies on how exactly to do 4k as current tech can't output that much from a single input. Early versions do indeed need 2 high end graphics cards (one input to 1 half of the screen and the 2nd to the other) but if done with a single card FPS is cut in half.

In the mean time, I would go with a 1440p monitor until the 4k resolution has had more development.

I mean you could try a 1600p monitor if you really want as many pixels per space as possible but 1440p is more than sufficient...what monitor do you have that you are comparing against?

I am using the Sony 24" 3D display as a monitor. It works great for 1080p but is only 60hz.

As previously mentioned, I was looking to get the Dell UP2414Q.

I am now looking at either these two monitors:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236294CVF

Is 1600p supported among most games?

It should be supported but out of those two monitors, I would personally go for the asus - not least because they are dedicated gaming monitor creation specialists (they provide for MLG) but because they are a well known brand, have a reasonable-ish price tag, lower response time and high contrast ratio! is it an IPS monitor? I love IPS monitors for gaming - the blacks look so vivid!

1600p is supported by some, 1440p more and all modern titles at 1080p. If you can't go tall, you can always go wide and grab 2 extra monitors for 5760x1080.

I personally hate multiple displays, so that's a no go for me. 1600p is also out of the question since it isn't ~90% (I play a LOT of games) supported and I don't want black boxes when I game.

This is the only 1440p IPS monitor I could find:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824176275CVF&Tpk=ips%201440p

Is the extra $ for IPS worth it for less specs?

I'm also seeing that you can't get 1440p/1600p over 60hz, so should I just go 4k anyways?

1 more question. I am almost dead set on that Asus but I found this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/X-Star-DP2710-LED-MDP-Matte-Perfect-Pixel-27-1440p-PLS-DP-HDMI-DVI-PC-Monitor-/121156200631?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item1c3578e8b7

Many people praise there PLS screens. Apparently they are like IPS. Is there any truth to these claims?

"Korean PLS monitors are the best 1440p monitors for gaming.

Excellent image quality (1440p PLS is unbeatable)
Excellent response times (6ms)
Excellent motion performance (120Hz+)

The same panel as the Samsung S27A850, Asus PB278Q, etc but with the added overclockability.

All for a cheaper price."

I'm not worried about the $. I just want the best. The ASUS destroys it in specs. I'm just wondering.

So this is where I'm at. I like 60hz. When I played Tomb Raider in 60hz it looked fantastic. I'm just curious because my gtx780SLI will no doubt push more than 60fps in 1440p and I don't believe in V-Sync very much (otherwise why would they make g-sync?). So this korean overclocking monitor thing interests me. It doesn't look too hard either. Thoughts?

FINAL EDIT: Forget it. Going with the ASUS. I'm a no BS type of guy. Thanks all of you.
