Why does Powerline have to be plugged directly into the wall?

Hi,

At the moment I have the transmitter end plugged into an extension cord and the receiving ending straight into the wall.

However I have heard that I should plug both straight into the wall, why and will this make my internet speeds faster? If so, by how much?

Oh right thanks, so how much of a difference do you think this will make?
 
It depends upon the "extension cord".....you might want to consider something like this:

This is just a "splitter" of the two outlets into 6 - there is no protection build into the outlet. Here is an example of a power strip:

So only if the power strip has a surge protector will it degrade the speed?
