I have just installed a new SSD drive along side my old Sata HHD drive. Everything was working fine on old drive now i have installed Win 7 on new SSD i am having problems getting the USB's to connect/recognise any external storage devices. The USB's work as normal if i plug say a USB stick in or my webcam etc but not if i plug any of my external drives, I have been trying to connect my Seagate external, also my WD passport drive but no joy. Any ideas please. Not sure if it will make any difference but i have left the OS on the other drive as well but also i have changed the names of the drives.

Hi Yogi, all my USB's are USB2.0. All the externals worked on the other drive as well. I think i may have found the problem whilst searching on-line. When i got to the device manager panel it now shows the hard drive in there without a letter, but i cannot right click and give it a letter. The drive seems to be split into 4 partitions.Only options are to delete or properties i think. I read that the only way to give it a letter would be to delete the hard drive and then reallocate a letter therefore my computer would then see it. Not really wanting to delete all info yet so still searching for another way around it,

Connect your USB HDD to the computer and go to Start and right click on Computer, Select "Manage". This brings up the Computer Management Console. On the left look for "Storage" and click the plus sign. This opens up the Disk Management console. Looked for some boxes with stripes in them on the lower right. Find your USB drive and right click on it. One of the options should be "Change Drive Letters and Paths". Select this and assign a drive letter to your drive. See if that fixes your problem.

I have already tried what you said Yogi but i do not get the option to change the letter of the drive,. Everything is greyed out except Delete and properties. Maybe external hard drive corrupted or something. :(

Thanks Yogi, yeah i got round to testing it on my laptop and that would not recognise it neither. So on a good note, at least i know my main PC is ok, on the downside now i cannot access my external hard drive with all my back up info on lol. Like i said before, i read that i would have to delete all the partitions on it to give it a new letter. :(
