That's my concern that by upgrading 1 thing it would cause a chain reaction up upgrades to make everything else compatible.

Well, not being compatible isnt really a huge concern, its more along the lines of problems with power supply wattage/quality, limits to video card size due to the case size, airflow, things of that nature, and by the time you get everything to aleviate those kind of issues, you'll have pretty much replaced everything anyways.
I'm assuming you want to use the system for gaming.
You could probably reuse your old hard drive, ram(assuming its ddr3 1333 at least), and possibly the cpu, but if it were me, I'd upgrade to at least an ivy bridge, or high end AMD cpu.

If you can give us an idea of your budget, and what exactly you want your system to do, we can help you choose the right parts.

I get what you mean. Basically what I concluded lol. Was going to go to 650ti boost which would need more than the stock 300w psu. And then I would wonder whether it would ventilate properly. Honestly not sure the ram, but yes basically just gaming (steam and possibly mmos) would like to be able to run say bioshock infinite for example, on high or better at 1080p. My current pc on low settings plays bioshock maybe 10-20 fps...maybe. Maybe also some recording like fraps and making videos.

As for budget id range between 3-700 roughly, no real budget honestly. I also have these parts on hand. Antec 300 Mid Tower GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor BFG Tech GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7200 SATA HDD 3.5" 3.0GB/s

Using your Antec case, your current hard drive, and the gskills ram, you could drop those things out of this build: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/build-your-own-gaming-pc-core-i5,3708.html and you should be less than the 700 dollars.
You could conceivably use the i5 and the motherboard from your dell system, that would drop the price another couple hundred or so, but in reality, the cpu is going to hold you back with a quality gpu.

The third core in the phenom would keep it close to the hyper threading in the i5, but I think the higher clock speed and turbo feature on the I5 will make it perform better in most games. If you can squeeze the budget enough, I would really recommend getting a new cpu/motherboard. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1515357 would be a pretty big upgrade, and is only 200 for the combo. That would pretty much just leave you with GPU and power supply to purchase.
Something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125447 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027
With those together, the total would be right around 400 bucks, and you could use your hard drive, the gskills ram, your cd drive, and your case to go with it.

What about the 2gb version of that gpu? Any reason why to choose the one you suggested besides budget?

Was trying to stay as cheap as possible, for about 25 more, the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121725 would be a better card.

I guess i should ask if you want to cannabalize the Dell system to build a new one, or are looking for a complete new system. The dell mobo would physically fit into the antec case, but the i/o shield could be different from the standard atx. You could also have issues getting the front panel buttons/Leds/audio jacks to work properly. Dell has done a lot of propietary things with their systems over the years, and its hard to find hard data stating exactly what they have that isnt standard equipment.
