how do i confirm what OS my laptop is running on

My laptop says i'm running windows XP Pro with SP2. But when i go to update to SP3 or newer a explorer it thinks i'm running windows 2000. non of the updates will work.
Can anyone help how to solve this.

Thanks for the replies: I have looked in system info in control panel it says XP. I go to download or update the system when it fails the help pages it comes up with are for windows 2000. I have google chrome installed, when i open this it says i should update to XP as some function may not work. Everything i have looked at on my system says i'm on XP. Is there some hidden setting the internet sees that may show my OS incorrectly?
