I'm trying to install windows 8 on my new rig but don't have a dvd drive so decided to make a USB Boot drive. When I tried to boot into it, there was an error saying that my boot drive did or attempted to change setting on the UEFI. When I tried to make the boot drive again, it wouldn't work. It would just get stuck at the underscore blinking. I decided to fix the bios by updating it through EZ FLASH, but it says can't read the file.

TL;DR
I'm completely lost. I can't install windows because either my boot drive is messed up or something is wrong with the BIOS, and I can't fix the BIOS because it won't let me update.

Go to Asus website search your mobo and download the bios make sure the file name is correct if not it may not be able to load use ezflash to load the new bios and before you do that reboot the PC to clear any os issues

If you have an ISO of win8 you bees a 8gb flash drive and make it bootable using :http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool as for the bios update you should not need to rename the file

He doesn't have burner so he needs a bootable flash drive to install win8. As for the motherboard bios update the asus ezflash should take care of it no need to burn it or make it bootable in dos but by running the update from within the os there is a small chance the in stallion becomes corrupted unrecoverable and end up with a reinstallation of the os

I tried using the microsoft tool and it didn't work. It keeps saying Invalid ISO file, and many other people have been getting that error. There are a lot of people saying to edit the image file to get it under microsoft specs for the program to work. I tried it and still didn't work so I found another USB tool. Its the Zotac WinUSB tool and that worked. It got through the bios but it wouldn't load.

As for the bios update, I went through the bios and found the file on the USB. I pressed enter to select it and update, but after freezing for a minute it says can't read the file. I got it directly from the ASUS website.

Ya if I have to, I can just borrow a drive from one of my other desktops to boot, but even Ubuntu won't install from the USB boot drive, so I'm pretty sure something is wrong with the motherboard.

Ok let's try this get freeware win to USB search it on google make try to make a new image the problem with win 8 maybe it's new file system it's not ntfs which maybe the reason why it's not making the USB flash drive bootable, now problem 2 try updating the mobo bios from within windows I mean using asus ezflash utility on windows

Does the flash drive have to be NTFS to be a boot drive? I've been using fat32. Thats also what the manual says to do for bios updates (use fat32).

To make a windows bootable flash drive it has to be ntfs(win7) on windows 8 it's different, so if the software you're using does not support the new format you can't make a bootable flash drive, and for the bios update yes you're correct it should be fat32

This is the tool I used to make the windows boot drive, but even then when I made the Ubuntu boot drive, everything went fine except I couldn't boot into it from the BIOS. Should I try doing it on a dvd and booting from an odd?

Try this boot to bios chafe boot order set USB to first if that don't work try regular boot press f8 it should take you to boot options select USB(make sure is already plug in to the rear of mobo) f10-12 may do the same function

Ok I took a dvd drive from one of my other desktops and it seems to be working fine. I don't know how the bios update will turn out because windows is still installing but so far everything seems to be fine. Thanks for the help everyone, but I still don't understand why I couldn't boot from my USB drive.

I tried installing windows through the dvd and the install says, can't find all files necessary, but this was from my back up disc. I am going to try it with my original disc tomorrow, but I am pretty sure I will run into the same problem. I've used this back up disc before and it has always worked, so I'm not sure why it isn't this time.

So I tried it with the official windows 7 disc, and have found that the most probable cause is that when I tried to make a hackintosh, the partition made on my ssd was not allowing the install to take place. For some reason I can't delete the partition from the boot screen so I will try to install windows on my HDD, and then find out how to wipe my ssd from windows 7. Then I plan to reinstall widows 8 on my ssd and wipe my harddrive.
