Random shut downs

My computer seems to randomly shut down instantly with no warning. Sometimes it is when I am playing games but other times it is when the computer is idle or under lighter use. I have checked in the event viewer, although I'm not sure entirely what I'm looking for, there doesn't appear to be anything other than an improper shut down error. I downloaded hwmonitor to check temps and core temps seem to idle at 62 C and peak around 83, gpu (GeForce 9500 GS) idle at 57 and peak at 77. These were measured after I can of aired everything, but after only about 15 minutes of gaming, and no shut down experienced. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I just re-read your original post. I think I mis-read it the first time. I thought you were referring to gfx card temps at 62C/83C. I see now that you were referring to CPU core temps. My bad. Yes, that is an indication that the CPU is getting too hot. Depending on which CPU you have, that high temp is getting near the 'throttle back' temp. Much hotter and the next step is to shut down. So yes, cleaning the cooler will make a big difference. If you've had the original CPU installed for several years, the thermal paste between CPU and cooler is probably dried out too. That could use replacing.
