After a fiasco yesterday with really bad temps i feel i may have gotten it right after 3 tries.
Re-applied the thermal paste this morning, and after about an hour im sitting at about 35C idle, and 40C while browsing the net, still will probably take time for the paste to cure, but im pretty sure i shouldnt have many problems just letting it sit for a few days. Thanks for the help for all those that answered.

Solution
Do you know the correct methods for applying thermal paste? I suggest looking those up, because if you're not sure, you probably didn't do it right.

im thinking its the thermal paste, either not enough or too little. What other info would you need?
Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-970 D3 with the F11 update which allows for support for the vishera cpu's

update: using HWmonitor says temp is idle at 70C...something is definitely wrong.
