I have a Sony Vaio PCG-7Z2L with an intel dual core T2310 CPU. I recently purchased a Core 2 Duo T9800, same socket size, and I'm wondering if it will work or if there are other specifications besides socket size that would make it compatible or not.

According to: http://www.cnet.com/laptops/sony-vaio-sz/4507-3121_7-31...

Your laptop uses an "Mobile Intel 945GM Express" chipset. I don't think that chipset supports the T9000 series processors. (I'm typing this on a Fujitsu LifeBook T5010, that is running a T9550 processor.) The chipset if Your machine runs DDR2 RAM, while that processor expects DDR3. Your chipset runs a 400MHz or 533MHz FSB, while that processor needs a 1066MHz FSB. The BIOS will not like that processor.

In general, laptops' BIOSes limit the processors You can use farther than do desktops' BIOSes. You are probably (99% likely) stuck with a processor that Sony shipped in that laptop at some point.

Sorry,

Andy
