So as it happens, I have available to me, a:

ASUS MATRIX Radeon HD 7970 GHz Platinum
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
and a

PNY GTX 680 2GB Enthusiast Edition
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Since I already have them on hand (well the 680 is being shipped right now used) so price is not a factor at all, I just need to figure out which is best. I read a lots of threads comparing the 2 but haven't found anything with the Asus Platinum edition in the mix. I am not looking to overclock (at least not right now) and I can always go back to either one when that time comes.

My rig right now is a i7-4770K, MSI G46 gaming MB, 16gb 1600 ram, 120gb ssd for windows 7, 1tb SSHD game drive, 730w Raidmax PSU all in the Rosewill Challenger. In the mail I have a used PNY 680 Ent. and a Cooler Master HAF XB.

Now from what I read, they are pretty close as for gaming, but I wonder why GPU charts show the 680 so much higher, have I read wrong information?

PS: I am gaming at a weird resolution: 4480x1080, I am using a |19" 5:4 | 24" 16:9 | 19" 5:4| for setup, using either softth or "Windowed Borderless Gaming" to achieve full screens and I really like it:

That 7970 will perform better in most games because its a GHZ.

If it wasn't a GHZ the 680 would be better.

Since you said you don't want to OC I would go with the 7970.

You just updated it with your resolution yes without a doubt use the 7970 GHZ. It will beat the 680 in almost every game at that res.

I would strongly agree that both cards are close, BUT were talking about the platinum edition which has been clocked to a pretty high rate and a really good performer. Though most other 7970's can do this the GTX 680 doesn't have as good of an overclocking ability like the 7970. The Platinum edition is running at 316GB/s, more than 100GB/s faster then the GTX 680. Though that isn't all information about the cards performance comparisons, In the future the way gaming is heading you are going to need that extra video ram and wider bus. were talking 2GB 256-Bit vs 3GB 384-Bit, you'll get the laster longing performance from the 7970 platinum compared to the GTX 680. Being in mind the 7970 draws 55More watts then GTX 680 so power/performance wise the GTX 680 does better but for a 195 watt card it is very very good. The 7970 is 250 watt and a more decent graphics card in my opinion. Have you considered a GTX 770? They are normally priced less then the 680 but have been modified and draws 230 Watts and been clocked over 200GB/s, Unlike the GTX 680. The 7970 platinum has already been overclocked but that all comes with gaming and performance benefits. Your PSU will run both GPU's with ease but in my opinion and stats the 7970 is the better option.

Not true, Just because it's a GHz doesn't mean it is always better, depends on driver support for games which Nvidia tends to do much better for more games but for popular games there shouldn't be a problem. Since you use three screens the extra 1GB Vram and Wider bus will serve you MUCH MUCH better. 2GB Vram just isn't going to cut it on three screens even with a card like the GTX 680

A little clarification: my asus matrix is giving me trouble, artifacts if I don't push the fan manually, once the VRam goes over 60deg (known problem of the platinums), I start to see artifacts, I am hoping that putting it into the HAF XB case will fix that however as there are 2 fans blowing right on the side of where the card will be instead of nothing in the Rosewill challenger. Sorry I should have put that in the first post!

so the cooling of your 7970 platinum is a problem?

unknownofprob> Yes cooling has been a problem, I get by fine by setting the fan control to user setup, it's just a bit louder, but I am hoping I won't have to once I switch to the Haf XB case since there are 2 big fans blowing side-wise on the video card, should keep the vram cool.

Right now in the rosewill challenger case, the card barely fits (it's a monster!), and there is no fan directly on the card. Since they design its cooling badly (no cooling contact on the vram from what I understand), the vram gets hot and it pops artifacts (I observed it myself, if the vram goes above 60 deg, I will start to see artifacts till I can't see anything anymore, then setting the fan higher than it should have to be, the vram cools down and the artifacts go away. I do play the games on ultra insanely high lol).

From what I've read, the vram overheating is a common problem on those cards and getting one that works correctly is like the lottery. But again, I didn't specify it in the first post because I am pretty sure the new case will fix that because of its awesome airflow.

The card is pretty decent at cooling, It doesn't need direct contact with the Vram as it's direct contact with the CPU chip, the part that actually gets very hot, Ram doesn't tend to get very hot but you are probably using it max out so it will get hot. If that card is getting hot then the GTX 680 and others will most likely be even hotter as running three monitors is very GPU dependent and needs lots of video ram and a high memory bus, The 7970 does better then the GTX 680 at that especially on three monitors. The HAF X 942 Has exceptional airflow, better then the HAF XB but having fans on the side doesn't always help as it disrupts the airflow as the fans are at the bottom of the card. Having fans at the front, back, top and bottom will get the best and maximised cooling.
