I hadn’t really planned on upgrading (though I’ve been sorta kinda wanting to), but the upgrade bug just bit me on the face all the sudden. I’m in a little bit of a predicament here. My current cpu is the old Q8400. I’m looking to upgrade my cpu and motherboard (and RAM) to either a i5-3570k or i5 4670K. Though the 3570k is a last gen chip, in real world gaming they both still perform very similar, but I can get access to the 3570k cpu/motherboard (intel dp67bg) combo at ~$80 less than the 4670k combo I’m currently looking at (msi z87). That $80 in “savings” could help cover the cost of RAM and aftermarket cooler since these cpus are unlocked, afterall. I want to keep my budget small as reasonable, however, I can’t decide if getting the 4670k combo is worth the extra $80. Thanks.

It depends on how much 80 bucks is for your personally.

I´d go for Haswell mostly because it comes with the Z87 chipset which has more features and is probably more futureproof.

If you want to future proof as well as upgrade, get the 4670k. Also, apparently MSI have unstable boards that many people don't recommend.

If you intend to overclock and stuff like that, get the 3570k. I hear Haswell chips don't overclock as well and have heat issues.

Thanks for your feedbacks. There's no doubt that the haswell and z87 motherboards are a bit more "futureproof." That being said, each iteration of processors within the last few years hasn't really translated into drastic performance increase in terms of gaming. With the trend that's been going on I'm betting that the next generation of processors will not be leaps and bounds better (gaming purposes) than what is currently available. But I digress.

In the end, I'd agree that it depends on how much I'm willing to personally bend my budget.
