Moving from Vista on HD to Windows 7 on SSD

I'm planning to move my OS onto a SSD, but I need a better idea of what I'm doing first!

I'm currently running Windows Vista but I've heard that Vista has problems with using SSDs, so I'm wondering about upgrading to Windows 7.

So... would I be better off installing Windows 7 on the SSD, then booting from that and using my HD as a data drive, or upgrading Vista to W7 while it's still on my HD, then cloning it over to the SSD? Upgrading first sounds like the best option, because that should preserve/convert all my files and programs and so on, but I've also seen clean installs on SSD advised.

Alternatively, I suppose I could skip windows 7 for now and just clone vista over since I already have the SSD

Obviously, I would like to have to reinstall as few things as possible, and I'll make a backup before I change anything. Which should I go for?

The best, most reliable way ahead is simply a fresh install on the SSD. And reinstall of your applications.
Yes, it sounds like a pain, but it is guaranteed to work. The migration process usually works, but just reading in here, there are far more people having complications with that than a simple reinstall.

1. Full install on the SSD, not an 'upgrade' from Vista to 7. Why? because if you have to reinstall in the future, you'd probably have to install Vista again, and then the upgrade to 7.

2. There is apparently small performance hit after doing a migration. The sectors are not aligned properly on the SSD.

3. How often do you actually reinstall the OS? Maybe once a year? Doing all your applications again is not that much work.

4. Why carry all the old cruft from your Vista install over to that new speedy SSD? Starting fresh is best.
