What mobo do you have? I have Gigabyte 990FXA UD3 or something like that with 965BE
What is your monitor resolution?
If look new video cards maybe best buy is R9 270X or GTX 760 7970 / R280X can be good buy if plan is upgrade CPU later.

Maybe best look price. So what is budget? CF or SLI do not work with 500w psu.. Best stay with one.

Maybe best look 3-4 four games you like play most and find bechmarks on them. 60FPS is really good but anything over is playable.. But more is better.
If you have cpu cooler you can OC bit more out of that CPU. I did OC my 965 to 4GHZ and it was really easy to do. I have this cooler.

I think best buy is GTX 650Ti boost 130$ price.

Then next step up is 7870 it gives lot more power to run games but price jumps too..

You can follow good deals just order the newsletter from newegg and other stores..
