Which one of these is better for the price, and will run new games at medium/high settings?

Their performance is very similar and if you want to run demanding games in high settings, you should probably invest in more powerful graphics cards.
Of those two the ASUS card is probably the best choice, it has even more overclock ability with its larger heatsink.

I will be upgrading it in future but just for the mean time I will use one of these, so there isn't any need for me to overclock. Is the asus still a better buy though?

How far away is that future?
If i knew that I would be buying a better card in the near future, I would just settle myself with the cheapest one out there.
In this case it would be the XFX card.
There performance is very similar anyways so you wouldn't be missing a lot.

I suggest you go with the 7790 as it is significantly faster than the 7770
