I'm looking to buy a GPU for my PC that will provide the best possible performance for my budget on next generation games, the titles that will be released in the coming year of 2014 for Xbox One and PS4.

Amd's R9 280x and Nvidia's GTX770 seem to offer similar performances on current generation games with a marginal price difference but I am wondering if AMD cards will perform better in next generation games given that developers could be optimizing their games for AMD hardware that is used in the new consoles.

So what would you go for? The AMD or Nvidia card?

I would go with the Nvidia cards as I would prefer PhysX to the ypcoming Mantle. AMD cards perform better in many games but Nvidia cards have better details in textures due to PhysX. Compare Mantle and PhysX and see what you feel suits your requirements as this decision is largely based on personal opinions.

its funny how people think mantle is better than Microsoft's dx11.3..
AMD makes their own API because they can't afford Microsoft's dx11.3 lol...
Microsoft vs amd??? I'd go for Microsoft...
your OS is a Microsoft in the first place

You can get software for amd cards that does physX anyway thats not such a big factor to be honest

Bit of an oxymoron to ask which of those cards is more future proof, both are a generation old already (680 and 7970 rebrands) and there is already stronger hardware released.

Which one is going to be more "future proof" (which isn't going to happen whatever you do) really depends on what you plan to do in the future. Both side have unreleased tech that are potentially game changers, Mantle will revolutionize graphics performance while G-Sync will revolutionize Display technology and how it integrates with the GPU.

If you forsee buying a new monitor within the next year, Nvidia is a very good option right now as you can grab a 1st gen G-Sync monitor. If not, AMD is probably better as your not going to benefit from G-Sync and has something in the pipe that will improve performance in a direct way.

Its also worth noting is Nvidia has ShadowPlay and Shield on its side right now, if your interested in recording/streaming content and Android Handheld consoles, then thats pretty compelling.

Nvidia is the way. With nvidia gpu's you get: gpu boost 2.0 (in 700 series), geforce experience (optimizes your games to best graphics, latest drivers and you can record your gameplay with shadowplau), nvidia control panel (easiest control panel for adjusting performance / quality and such), evga precision x (easiest OC and gpu monitoring program in my opinion) and nvidia is just so good looking :)

I wouldn't mind sacrificing 2-5 fps for having PhysX from the factory. Also, I wouldn't want to draw up conclusions about AMDs new Mantle before it's tried and tested because it may not even live up to the hype...

I'm no 'fanboy' but I'm just inclined to Intel and Nvidia. AMD might offer better performance (At times) at a cheaper price but Nvidia and Intel will definitely knock your socks off if quality is concerned. Especially in hot countries like India, Middle-East et cetera, an Intel is always preferred.

It tends to depend on games you will play.
Nvidia now has gsync which is interesting for some. Needs a special monitor though

I would forget about Physx and Mantle because they are more or less gimmicks IMO

Now NVidia is known for using immoral business practices hence why I buy AMD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x9B_4qBAkk I suggest you look at this video before deciding if PhysX is a gimmick. We rarely know anything about Mantle so I can't judge on that. However, when I saw this video, I was amazed. Not trying to say that AMD sucks and Nvidia is the best, just trying to prove that PhysX is kind of amazing.

Hmm that is true amd does run hoter but i guess that is what you get with the cheaper price but if you get a good 3rd party cooler like i do my 7950 runs at 35-40 degrees on load

Oh... But isn't it better spending the money you spend the spent on the aftermarket cooler on purchasing a nice Nvidia card... :p

Aha... Nice combo though :p

$75 !?! OMG HOW?

Bleh just adds a bunch of clutter to the screen...
Besides with a decent CPU you can generally run low Physx on it

I felt that PhysX is amazing. But that's difference of opinions for ya...

just get the gpu that suit your needs. no need to worry about the future. when it comes just follow what ever that make sense at that time.

ok, firstly, I'm not one of those people who goes round the internet flaming. But. This is almost 100% erroneous. Physx is a tech dealing with modelling in detail objects that are in motion and the physics of said objects - a quick youtube search for the borderlands 2 physx demo should show you what i mean. It doesn't have anything to do with texture rendering it detail. Mantle, on the other hand, is an api that allows developers to code at a level closer to the base hardware, offering up performance increases in terms of framerates. Again nothing to do with detail of textures. While some games are optimised for each manufacturer, either amd or nvidia, there's little tle to no difference between the two in terms of textures. I believe they use different methods of antialiasing, and i believe, though do your research on this one, because I'm not sure anymore, that amd's method is faster, but dirtier than nvidias. As far as the original question OP, we may well see more optimisation for amd cards, due to the ability of mantle to code closer to the metal as it were, but only time will tell on that, its not something anyone could say for certain now. My advice would be to check which games you currently play or want to play for physx use. If they use it, you'll get a much better experience graphically ON THOSE GAMES. If you have no need for physx, then its much of a muchness and id suggest going for whatever you can get more bang for your buck for. Personally I'm considering AMD for my next upgrade for exactly the same reason, though i might wait till the gtx 8xx series comes out to make a decision. I hope that's cleared the water anyway.
