So I have:
AMD Radeon 7870 2GB DDR5
AMD Fx Quad Core 4100
8GB RAM
1.5TB of HDD

Whenever I look at large battles on Bf3 my framerate drops significantly :/

Any ideas as to why?

Solution
CPU. You'll need a pretty beefy chip for 64p. I have an Atlon II X4, I usually get 30-40 fps on MP, but in 64p on small maps it sometimes drops to 20s.

So say I get an Fx 6300 will than improve performance much do you reckon?

Yes, you should see a significant gain in performance with that cpu

Go with the 8320 it's only $10 more and you'll see a vast improvement.

actually you are half right
yes, for 10$ definitely go with 8320
but about ingame performance there is only a low difference, as games are not threaded enough, but that might change in the future
BUT can your motherboard handle a 125W CPU? that is the main question

I meant the improvement from upgrading the 4100.

ohh, yea, i see, thats right
OP what motherboard do you have? so we could advise you the maximum upgrade you can/should get

Shouldn't most motherboards with an AM3+ socket support an 8320? Assuming this isn't a prebuilt.

actually loads of 760G chipset only support CPUs until 95W, 970 usually support up to 125W
you are right, TDP is for temperature, but it does indicates how much power does the CPU use, higher the TDP=more power it uses.
