As the title says. I have a really slow hard drive and was looking to upgrade to a SSD but is there a way I could transfer my OS onto it and how would I still us my hard drive. I have never had another hard drive before and I was wondering how it would work, will I just be able to keep all of my items on my hard drive as they are but my OS will boot on my SSD? I'm not sure if this is making sense to anyone but I would like to know before I buy one.

Thanks.

all I want to do is keep all of my files on my hard drive and just put my OS and some other programs onto my SSD

The best way for that is to install the OS fresh on the SSD, and then applications wherever you choose.
Some of the migration tools allow for different options, but I have not seen one that allows you to choose 'some' programs, and not others.

But for instance Steam. You can move that whole thing around to where you choose. No downloading all that again.

Put the Steam client wherever, and the games can live on whichever drive you have space for. Or both.

Exactly!
The SSD is the boot drive. You do, however, need to reinstall all your applications. The new OS on the SSD knows nothing about them. But if you have the install disks and files...no problem.

But you can't just access the applications that currently live on the HDD. It can kind of be made to work (maybe), but you will be screwing with that for weeks.

downloading the applications again wont be that bad as long as I dont have to install all my big files again such as my games that is ok. Thanks :)
