Over the holidays, my sister got a brand new portable 1TB harddrive by toshiba. She wanted to clone her current disk onto an old laptop, but the laptop will not boot from the usb.

To investigate, I tried to boot my own laptop from the usb, but that didn't work. I connected the harddrive to my own computer, and while there's an icon telling me that a peripheral device can be safely removed, it does not show up as an available drive. I looked at the disk management panel, and it's simply not there.

The connections are good, the power light goes on when conneted to a computer, everything seems to be fine except that I can't use it at all.

Any ideas?

I think you have your terminology wrong, you clone from the source to the destination.

So going by what you said, you tried to clone an empty drive to your own laptop to which the result would be two empty drives had it worked.

Please try to rephase what you wish to accomplish here.
