Hello all.

I just purchased a 4770K and am looking to buy a compatible mobo. I'm really torn between the Asus Z87 Expert and the Z87 Pro. From what it looks like the Expert only really has an extra PCIE 3.0 slot and a Thunderbolt port. This makes it slightly harder for me to justify spending the extra $40.

I'm just kind of wondering if the Thunderbolt port is really worth the extra money? From what I've seen most devices that support Thunderbolt are extremely expensive and more for professional use. I'm a little reluctant to drop an extra $40 just for a little bit of future-proofing.

Don't do it. Thunderbolt is an unnessessary addition to a PC. If you don't plan on getting Thunderbolt devices don't add the extra on. Use the $40 for something else. Thunderbolt, although extremely fast is going to be obsolete due to prices. SATA III has 6Gb/s data transfer speed and Thunderbolt has 10Gb/s transfer speed. USB 3.0 has 5Gb/s transfer speed.

Look at it this way.
Internal SATA III HDD @ 6Gb/s = £65
External USB 3.0 HDD @ 5Gb/s = £50
External Thunderbolt HDD @ 10Gb/s = £170

That's an extra £20-25 PER 1Gb/s

You won't notice the difference, the only thing you'll notice is that you're $40 short and won't have any money to buy the milk and bread on the way home.
