Hi all. So I have both a laptop and a desktop. I decided to go ahead and pull the SSD out of my laptop and put it in my desktop, since all I use it for is programming on Linux anyways (just ordered a 60GB HDD off ebay to replace it).
At first I tried just plugging it in, but Linux Mint was selfish and wouldn't let Windows boot even when I selected the Windows SSD from the boot menu. I disabled the new and was able to boot normally. I then formatted it using Disk Management. All seemed well. Well, I also added another 1TB HDD to my system and tried booting. Now I just get the grub rescue screen. I tried disabling all of my drives except my Windows SSD and my BIOS ignores it and instead tries booting from one of my secondaries. What?!
Sure enough, unplugging the Linux SSD fixed it. How can I remove the old boot record without using Windows? I may just throw it out my window first! I'm using the ASRock 970 Extreme4 if you need to know.
