Hi all,

I'm looking at a new system build and am in need of a reality check on the graphics card(s). Primary purpose is gaming.

Target system build price is under $2k (similar to the system builder marathon pricing - not including OS, peripherals). I've based it off the Enthusiast build from this quarter, with some upgrades.

With what I have put together right now, I've still a little under $800 that can go towards the graphics card(s). Based on that, I was looking at a pair of 770s.

The crux is, I have a 1920x1200 , 60Hz monitor and I'm not really looking to go multiscreen or upgrade for the foreseeable future. Is there really a need to pour that much money into graphics for a single monitor? I want this system future proof for a good 6-8 years and don't want to have to scale down graphics on new games at all for about the next 4 years. I don't mind having untapped potential, but there's a line there somewhere.

Basics on the rest of the system below:
CPU: i7-4770K
MB: ASUS Z87-PLUS
Memory: Patriot Viper 3 DDR-1866 32 GB
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
HD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
PS: Corsair TX750 V2

Thanks for the input!

A single, brutally powerful card will serve you well for many, many years of inefficient console ports. In addition, until game developers start making games for the PC first, and since the XBone and PoS4 [ ;) ] don't have, and will...

No, you really won't need a pair of cards with a single display. I, and many others here, follow a simple rule: a single powerful card is better than a pair of less powerful ones.

Get the single, most powerful card you can get for your $800.

Going with a single card would get me up to a 780 or 780 Ti, but is there even a need to go beyond a 770 with the single monitor? I know the future is impossible to predict, but even now the games are targetting the higher resolution/multi-monitor crowd.

A 770 will do you fine for now.
With the new generation of consoles out how much will developers want to push the boundaries of graphics for a while at least. There will always be exceptions like Crysis 4 for example:)

Thanks for your thoughts. Also spotted elsewhere on here that February is supposed to bring new nVidia products and pricing. I've waited this long, so a couple more months won't kill me.
