they are good, a friend of mine has a HIS 7970 and its fantastic. the cooler is really good too.

I'd go with Nvidia, I've used both brands extensively and AMD/ATI has unfortunately always let me down, whether driver issues or card issues.

I'm not an AMD basher either, I have an 8120 cpu and think it runs great, but I've never had one of their cards work the way it's supposed to.

this really comes down to personal preference as they are both great cards, the 770 has physX which looks great but not that many games support it. the 280x has a 384 bit bus and 3gb of vram which gives you better performance on a high res monitor. honestly just go with whatever is cheaper at the moment because they are both great

The GTX 770 and the 280x perform about the same. The 770 is a couple FPS faster in some the 280x a couple faster in others. I'd look up the benchmarks for the cards and see which performs better in the games you plan on playing or just get whichever is cheaper.
