Hey friends,
I have a problem with my Toshiba ext. HDD. It works fine when I plug it in the USB 2.0 port, but when it is plugged into the USB 3.0 does not show up. THe blue light lits but doe NOT blink and the disk is not visible in Device manager. I tried to format the disk (regular Format NTFS (not Quick Format), but again - nothing. Do you have any ideas? Your help and advice will be highly appreciated!
Thanks!

I have another Toshiba USB 3.0 portabl HDD and it works fine with my laptop and desktop. THe one I have problems with does not function and is not recognized on either PCs'. It lights up blue, but there is no activity and it is not shown in Device manager. Do you think that when I formatted the disk when I got it and may be I have erased some of the drivers on it (+ I have rearranged the space - created some logical drives on it). After that I formatted it again and tried to use it as a single drive, but the problem still persists. The other one (the one that works) I used it as is - no deleting and formatting after it was bought.

I have a similar problem. I have two external hard drives. one WD and one Seagate. Both are USB 3 without their own power supply. When I connect them to my computer - Asus H87M-PRO motherboard, Windows 7, they don't connect. Both of them power up, lights on, and then I hear the windows notification sound that a device is connected and then within seconds the same notification (I can't tell if its a notification for disconnection or connection since they have the same sound). Anyway, it just keeps making that connection/disconnection sound every few seconds. All that time it never appears that it was connected either on device manager or on my computer.
But if I connect it on the USB 2 ports, they work fine.
When I tried connecting them on another computer with USB 3 ports, they work.
I tried connecting them on the different USB 3 ports, front and back, on the Asus motherboard and still doesn't work. The USB 3 ports work though as I have other usb 3 devices that work fine with them. Its just these external USB 3 external hard drives.
I tried reinstalling the usb 3 drivers and still no success.
I tried changing the usb 3 cables and still no difference. I tried using the shortest cables i could find and still nothing.

USB 3.0 had quite the bad introduction issues. I have seen too many issues with devices connecting/disconnecting just from drivers/cables and even controllers that do not get along.

You may be able to try a powered USB hub between the system and drive.

I would recommend a new thread because this one is older.
