I recently got two 4GB sticks of Corsair Vengeance LP 1866MHz RAM, and have installed them and been using them for a few days now.

When I go to Task Manager, it says the Physical Memory being used is X%. I always thought this was how much of the RAM is being used, since it matched up with how much was being calculated in Processes. However, the percentages have not changed; it's still taking a percentage of 4GB, not 8GB, if you see what I mean.

Is 100% Physical memory how much RAM you have? If so why is my 8GB not being used? (Dxdiag identifies it as being 8GB)

thanks

in task manager, your total memory listed on the performance tab should reflect all the memory you have installed. If you installed two 4 GB sticks/modules and task manager says you only have 4 GB total, then either one of the sticks/modules are not inserted correctly, is inserted in the wrong slot (unlikely, should still read it), you have a bad memory slot, or you have a bad memory stick/module.

It says I have 8GB. But I'm still getting high "Physical Memory usage" numbers, 80% earlier, doing the same things as I was doing before when I had 4GB

computers will generally use as much memory as it finds installed, not 100% normally, but a high %

i have 8gb of ram and i don't think my system ever used more then 3.5gb no matter what programs i was using. simply put, 4gb is generally more then enough, the only reason 8gb became the "standard" system ram size was because ddr3 ram was insanely cheap 18-24 months ago. when people could get 8gb for $30-$50 of high end stuff. Since it became the system builder standard, no one seems willing to address the elephant in the room now that ram prices are spiking higher and higher, which is simply put, 4gb is STILL more then enough ram for 99% of computer users out there.

I really disagree. The reason I upgraded from 4GB was precisely because it isn't enough. My PC regularly went to 97%+ memory usage and as such would crash a lot. It's playing a lot nicer now :)
