Windows 7 parts installed on a second HDD

I inadvertently installed part of Windows 7 on a laptop HDD (labeled as D) that I had in my desktop. Most of the install is on the main HDD as C. But when I try to remove the laptop HDD, it refuses to boot. I have run bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot when both drives are connected. When I disconnect the laptop HDD, bootrec /scanOs will find Win7 but can't include it in BCD. What am I missing?
When both HDDs are connected windows Boot manager shows Vista and Win 7. With the laptop HDD disconnected, Win will not start. I'd like to avoid reinstalling Win7. there must be something on D that is needed for Win7 to boot.

More about windows parts installed hdd
  1. It is the boot manager, The tiny 100MB partition at the beginning of the D partition. That's why we aways insist to dis-connect all drives except the boot drive for installation. Time for a re-install, sorry.
  2. So no way to use a linux live CD to copy it from one drive to another?

Boot to windows, goto disk management an set the c partition active if it isn't already. Maybe that works.
