Hello. I am building my first gaming/workshop PC, I Intend on serious gaming as well as Digital concept art for work. I'm a self taught traditional artist so I have no idea the required computer specs for digital media programs or how to balance it with the gaming aspect. I am thinking about running a Nvidia GTX780 GPU, but have no idea what Motherboard to go with, I am leaning heavy toward ASUS but a friend said 2 buddy's of his both with a Masters in computer architecture and a PhD in computer science says to stay away from ASUS brands, that they don't last long, however I read nothing but good reviews, I had my eye on either the Maximus VI formula or the Maximus VI extreme, but at that price I want to make sure in getting moneys worth. What does the community suggest?

Thank you

I think gigabyte has the edge on lasting longer. Gigabyte uses more metal in the boards than other manufacturers. Either of these two boards would be great for you. They have Four-Channel Memory Architecture which is good for running digital media programs or anything that is memory intensive. LGA 2011 socket type boards are the way to go.

And for gaming, you'd definitely have an edge.

I suggest you compare a few of the more popular models. See which one has all the features you need. For example if you need wireless you can remove the second and third from that list, etc.

Edit: I tried to give you a link but it's too long and the forum won't accept it. Anyway, look at these too:

It's not allowing me to view the conparrason for some reason. I'm really looking for something that will last me a long time before having to be updated, was going to go with 2t of HDD space and 16g of RAM for the long haul, maybe a 250g SSD card for the gaming files.

What CPUs are compatible with the Gigabyte motherboards Spooky linked? And would water cooling be the best option for overclocking?

Ok so I think I have it narrowed down between the ASUS Sabertooth and the Gigabyte GA-X79, both seem like they have great cooling systems for expanded life and good overclocking capabilities. At at the same price of $229 could I really go wrong with either or does it come down to personal preference on brand and specs?

Edit: Just noticed that the Gigabyte supports 8 RAM slots which I think might be more beneficial to me in the long run. I think that's going to make it on my list.
I appreciate all answers and thank everyone for the help.

The SABERTOOTH Z87 is a good board but it does not have the 4 channel architecture. It is only dual channel. A GA X79 board costing the same price would be a no brainer for me. But I'm a gigabyte fan boy so choose for your self. I would get a a gigabyte X79 board plus either an i7-3820 or an i7-4820K and I would be a happy camper for sure. An X79 board, since you are gonna be running some graphics intensive programs.

Yeah I plan on running 3d character modeling programs as well as the lasted photoshop, so the more memory the better, as well as keeping my games up to at least high setting, Ultra but be nice but not a requirement for me. For RAM I was looking at Corsair Vengeance Quad channel 32gb, to much? With it I still fit within my $1500-$2000 price range.
