I have been having issues with my computer. Today, I applied a new layer of thermal paste to the cpu and decided to check on the ram while I was at it. I switched the ram around. I placed a where b was and b where a used to be. When I turned on the machine the monitor wasn't getting any feed from the gpu. I went back, placed the ram the way they were and everything was okay again. This happened before in the past. I moved the sticks around and the whole machine went nuts until I placed the sticks in the same position they are now.

This can't be normal but should I be worried that my machine prefers one config. over others?

It very well can be normal. Are the sticks of RAM the exact same? Do you have 2 DIMMs or 4? Are you running them in dual-channel by keeping them in the correct slots if you have 4?
It could also be a problem with your RAM, you can try running memtest86 to make sure the RAM is functioning correctly.
