how old of a rig could (hypothetically) compete with an X1 or PS4

I know that the X1 is a good deal worse, and looking at the GPU hierarchy chart, its 7790 is equal to a single GPU card from 4 years ago! Wow, tight-@ss MS really screwed up with that old of a GPU...that's the farthest back you can go without losing DX11, though I think in raw power a 295 or a couple high end 200s in SLI would be better.
To equal it, would a couple(maybe even 3) 8800/3870/2900XTs be equivalent to the Bone's GPU?

I'm specifically seeing how far back you can go, not for a simple modern equivalent.

PS4, I think a 5970 would suffice, I don't think even 3x8800Ultras would work.

There are so may variables that you have to take in for a count when doing these types of comparisons.

I do know my 3 year old..
i7 2600
GTX 550TI
8GB RAM
Beats a X1/PS4

But then you have to take into account game hardware optimization. And this is the reason Consoles are even Viable. If they had the same Optimizations that PCs have... Well, I dont think they would run nearly as good.

I'm kind of confused here the xbox1 is ruffly 7790 but the ps4 is more like a 7850 give or take but its not an apples to apples comparison. you would need the resolution and the settings info before you could make an accurate comparison.

its not like theres actual graphics benchmarks out for the consoles.

You can't really compare PCs to gaming consoles because if you tried you wouldn't be able to get most of the games to run as smoothly if you used the same hardware. Most of the games are highly customized to run on the console hardware at least smoothly that is.

i know about optimization, but I looked at benchmarks for BF4 and it's basically on par with like the 650ti and 5850

I just looked at some of the benchmarks and yeah it is right at the 650tis and 5850s level. I guess you could compare the newest gen consoles more than the last because they are at least running an x86 setup.

no I said the 5850 rather than 2 older cards, because it has dx11...one of the 1st dx11 cards. I looked it up

I know what you mean about optimization..but the 550 ti...no way man, even crap optimization you'd be beat by the X1, smoked the hell out of by the PS4
