I built this machine nearly two years ago. Let me start by listing some of the components.
AsrockP67 Pro 3 MB
i5 2500k
Sapphire 7950
2 sticks of ram. 4gb each.
Few fans on the case itself but other than that all the fans are stock.
That's about it I guess. I do not OC the cpu/gpu at all.
Over the course of owning the machine I have run over the same issue over and over again. The thermal paste dries out/goes bad which causes my machine to become slow, overheat and crash while gaming. A trademark of the issues is really slow playback when streaming 4-6 videos at the same time. I mean, I am loading videos but only watching one. I started out using mx-2 thermal paste. However, lately I ended up getting artic silver5 which I don't love but it works. How often have I been replacing paste? Every 6-8 months.
As explained above, overheating due to lack of thermal paste has been the only major issue my machine has ever given me. However, lately I have been having similar issues that are not being fixed with thermal paste. It started about a month ago. I noticed that playing videogames while having the speakers on made the computer crash. Details, it was while playing BF4. It would start out with my weapons not loading. I would run around without any weapons on my hands. Few minutes later the whole machine crashed. I stopped using the speakers and so the crashes
stopped. Few weeks later I noticed the slowdowns while having the speakers off. Dew days later my machine was crashing to games again. I finally decided to check on the cpu and the thermal paste seemed to be in okay condition. Prior to this I used the thin layer with the business card but for this one time I used the pea in the mid because I was told it was better. I wasn't happy and so i went back and added the thin layer with the business card again.
Other issues. Firefox stopped working yest. Whenever I open it it lags massively to the point that my whole machine locks up. I opened while writing this and it made me crash. Ctrl+Alt+Del becomes unresponsive and I have to force shut down. I use Kaspersky anti.
Temps, I have been monitoring temps and usage for a few days now. The cpu idles at the high 30s and low 40s. It waves around the 60-70's in games such as BF4. I have seen it go past the 80s and into the 90s in TSW in really crowded areas. I have been told that such temps are normal for my processors given that I am using stock cooler. Cpu usage is not abnormal. Haven't seen it go past 40%. Ram tends to be in the 30% idle and 50-60% while gaming. I had the chance to look at my cpu's temp during the massive slowdowns brought in by firefox and the temps were in the 30s. I may need a new cooler but other than that i dont think there is something terribly wrong with my cpu or ram.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that there are certain usb ports that do not work all of the time. I have this phone which has trouble transferring whenever I used certain port. Small chance that my MB has gone bad?
I haven't had the chance to look at my GPU's performance and temps but I am about to.
Anyways, I have to go get started with a few programs and stuff. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
