Massive system slowdowns and crashes while gaming.

I built this machine nearly two years ago. Let me start by listing some of the components.
AsrockP67 Pro 3 MB
i5 2500k
Sapphire 7950
2 sticks of ram. 4gb each.
Few fans on the case itself but other than that all the fans are stock.
That's about it I guess. I do not OC the cpu/gpu at all.

Over the course of owning the machine I have run over the same issue over and over again. The thermal paste dries out/goes bad which causes my machine to become slow, overheat and crash while gaming. A trademark of the issues is really slow playback when streaming 4-6 videos at the same time. I mean, I am loading videos but only watching one. I started out using mx-2 thermal paste. However, lately I ended up getting artic silver5 which I don't love but it works. How often have I been replacing paste? Every 6-8 months.

As explained above, overheating due to lack of thermal paste has been the only major issue my machine has ever given me. However, lately I have been having similar issues that are not being fixed with thermal paste. It started about a month ago. I noticed that playing videogames while having the speakers on made the computer crash. Details, it was while playing BF4. It would start out with my weapons not loading. I would run around without any weapons on my hands. Few minutes later the whole machine crashed. I stopped using the speakers and so the crashes
stopped. Few weeks later I noticed the slowdowns while having the speakers off. Dew days later my machine was crashing to games again. I finally decided to check on the cpu and the thermal paste seemed to be in okay condition. Prior to this I used the thin layer with the business card but for this one time I used the pea in the mid because I was told it was better. I wasn't happy and so i went back and added the thin layer with the business card again.

Other issues. Firefox stopped working yest. Whenever I open it it lags massively to the point that my whole machine locks up. I opened while writing this and it made me crash. Ctrl+Alt+Del becomes unresponsive and I have to force shut down. I use Kaspersky anti.

Temps, I have been monitoring temps and usage for a few days now. The cpu idles at the high 30s and low 40s. It waves around the 60-70's in games such as BF4. I have seen it go past the 80s and into the 90s in TSW in really crowded areas. I have been told that such temps are normal for my processors given that I am using stock cooler. Cpu usage is not abnormal. Haven't seen it go past 40%. Ram tends to be in the 30% idle and 50-60% while gaming. I had the chance to look at my cpu's temp during the massive slowdowns brought in by firefox and the temps were in the 30s. I may need a new cooler but other than that i dont think there is something terribly wrong with my cpu or ram.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that there are certain usb ports that do not work all of the time. I have this phone which has trouble transferring whenever I used certain port. Small chance that my MB has gone bad?

I haven't had the chance to look at my GPU's performance and temps but I am about to.

Anyways, I have to go get started with a few programs and stuff. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Oc sounds a bit too complicated. Too lazy to read and I haven't seen the need to oc yet.

Just checked ran a bunch of malware and such programs and my machine is clean. I knew it was clean but this guy really wanted me to check.

Also, just checked my GPU and temps are in the 30s at idle. As expected there is no activity since it is at idle. The GPU is at 0% usage. I just loaded runescape to check the activity and I am at 6% usage and 33% while a cutscene was playing. I don't want to load a real game because I dont want to crash but the activity seems normal?

One thing is bugging me. Idk if anyone here has catalyst and can help me. Under performance it says that the power is at 0%. I noticed that some time ago but I dont know if it's a bad thing.

Alright, I am going to go check my temps on Hitman Absolution: Chinatown and hopefully I wont crash.

GPU at 33% idle.
CPU at 16%
Ram 33%
CPU Temp 34C idle
GPU Temp 32C idle

Chinatown
CPU usage 40-60%
Ram usage 40%
GPU usage 48%
GPU clock 900MHZ
GPU mem clock 1250MHZ
GPU temp 41C
CPU temp 45C or so.

I guess these results don't mean much unless I manage to overheat whatever it is causing the shutdowns. I really dont want to keep crashing the machine though.

I'm going to go ask in the GPU section about the 0% power deal.

Hmm, so, I crashed about 10 minutes after I was done with the above. I wasn't playing or doing anything other than browsing. The whole system slowed down, I got an error and crashed. I was going to write down the error since it is the only one I have seen but the machine crashed...

Yep, I don't know what else to do anymore. For the time being I am just running an anti scan to be sure that there arent any viruses. I'm not very hopeful.

What are the chances that java or whichever of the free flash progs. are making me crash? Some videogames use java and stuff. I haven't updated that stuff in a long time because I don't care much for it. '

Ha, actually, my anti just finished checking for system vulnerabilities and firefox, java and flashplayer came back as recommended fixes. Now, I just need to find a way to open up the "details" in a browser that is not firefox...

Got rid of Java/Flash and firefox. Followed a firefox uninstall guide but I didn't work very well because my bookmarks are still there. I installed the latest version since my anti tells me that the version I had was vulnerable. The browser locked the moment I opened it but at least the rest of my machine didn't become laggy. I plan on not installing Java again. That being said, Idk wth is going on anymore. Much less do I know what to do.

bios flash board to latest version
and remove fire fox threw add and remove programs

then do a search for any lingering software by hitting the search engine in the start menu and searching firefox and java

Yeah, got rid of firefox and java but the problem is still there/

This is how it just went down on BF4.
Sound is usually the first to go. Environmental sounds go away and the only ones to remain are bullets. The next to go are icons such as weapon icons and grenades from the hud. Then, Alt+ tab stops working. It's almost as if everything else stops working to make sure that the game keeps going. The moment I close the game or the round ends the machine crashes. Interesting, don't you think?

I'm going to go ahead an upgrade bios.

Updated BIOS without any problems.

I am still noticing lag when playing a single video on youtube. Either the problem is still there or I am starting to go nuts.

I don't know anymore. Going to go sleep for a bit.

reboot the system after upgrading the bios it needs to restart for it to take proper effect a proper shutdown would be better

also whats your power supply

also update your 7950 sapphire from there website make sure its the exact model as theres several out there

Yeah , I wrote that after the restart. PSU is a seasonic M12II bronze; 620W I think. And yeah, my gpu is up to date too.

You can check your RAM by running this:
http://www.memtest.org/

Only have one stick of RAM in. test it. and repeat for the other one. Then put them back in. This test takes a while so be patient if you want to try it.

I can't seem to be able to get it to run off a CD. Burned the ISO and restarted but nothing. I'll work on it some more tomorrow.
